Carbon

Carbon is a small company (partnership) that makes environmentally friendly furniture, chimney pieces and picture/mirror frames from reclaimed timber. Each piece is designed to be sympathetic to the wood –sourced from old buildings and recently dismantled ancient sea defences from Brighton and Winchelsea.

Carry-a-Bag

Carry-a- Bag make a handmade range of bags to take with you to the shops to reduce waste from plastic bags that get thrown away. The bags are handmade in Hastings using strong cotton ticking lined with recycled vintage home furnishing fabrics such as table cloths or curtains. When you go shopping don't accept the plastic carrier bag - simply carry a bag!

Community Fruit and Veg Project

The Community Fruit and Veg Project is a new organisation that was set up a part of the Five a Day programme at Hastings and Rother PCT. Its main aims are to increase the availability of fruit and vegetables in Hastings, to ensure all produce is sold at affordable prices and to source locally grown fruit and veg whenever possible. It has volunteer-run stalls in community centres and also deliver bags, local veg boxes and bulk orders.

Dinsdale Woodworks

Dinsdale Woodworks are influenced by the simple forms of nature, where the wood is taken from the local surroundings. A wide range of products are made from local timbers including furniture, bowls, chopping boards and lamps. The timber is actually a bi-product of tree surgery, where nothing is wasted.

East Sussex Transport 2000

The group campaigns for sustainable transport and a move away from a car dependent society for environmental, social, health and economic reasons. In particular, the group is opposed to the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road. The group meets bi-monthly in Eastbourne and Lewes, and has a volunteer based at the Hastings Trust, Robertson Street, Hastings.

Fairtrade Hastings

The Hastings Fairtrade website www.hastingsfairtrade.co.uk lists all the shops and restaurants in Hastings and St Leonards where you can buy Fairtrade products and has details of local Fairtrade events and news.

Freecycle

The Hastings Freecycle Network is open to all who want to "recycle" that special something rather than throw it away. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano or an old door, you can post a message via the Freecycle Yahoo group. Or maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself! Community groups are also welcome to participate too! One constraint: everything posted must be free.

Friends of the Earth - Hastings and Rye

The Friends of the Earth group in Hastings is active on a range of local issues and is part of the Hastings Alliance campaigning against the Hastings and Bexhill link road. They aim to protect the surrounding areas of outstanding natural beauty, ancient woodlands, and unique architectural and landscape heritage. They also campaign on planning issues and help and support other groups.

Greenpeace Support Group - Hastings

This is the local branch of the national environmental campaign group.

Hastings Urban Bikes (HUB)

Hastings Urban Bikes developed out of a public Bicycle Users Group previously run by Hastings Borough Council. Since then, HUB has established itself as the voice of the town's cyclists and engaged in a series of campaigns to meet their needs. We have around 70 members; our monthly meetings are informal and open to all. HUB members are entitled to a 10% discount on bikes and spare parts at local bike shops.

Hastings Alliance

The Hastings Alliance is a group representing the views of several national and local organisations as well as concerned individuals, which is opposed to the construction of the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road. The chosen route passes within metres of the Combe Haven Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated as one of the nation′s most important wildlife sites, and would severely damage the important biodiversity of this region.

Hastings Against War

Hastings Against War formed in February 2003, when local peace campaigners and anti-war activists joined to oppose the invasion of Iraq. Working locally, and making links with other national groups, Hastings Against War consistently campaigned against the invasion of Iraq. Hastings Against War meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month 7.30PM Friends (Quaker) Meeting House, South Terrace, Hastings.They need help with on-going petitions and planned events on Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Guantanamo, against the arms trade, for a nuclear-free world, and in solidarity with the people of Palestine. They have an information stall some Saturdays between 12 and 2 PM in Hastings town centre pedestrian area outside Millet’s.

Hempgarden

Hempgarden manufacture their own range of fine, safe and effective bodycare products. All of the products utilise hemp as a base ingredient with botanical extracts and essential oils. They use only the finest natural ingredients and avoid the synthetic ‘nasties’ that many bodycare products contain. They keep packaging to a minimum and bottle in glass.

Horse Play Crafty Parties Ltd

This company makes craft kits for children's parties, or individual gifts, which are all made from recycled materials. The hobby-toys base design are made from 90% recycled cardboard, and the fabric and paper used to decorate the Hobby-Toy are 100% recycled, hand cut to a number of shapes, used to decorate and design a lovely quality toy.

Rother Environmental Group (REG)

REG campaigns for the protection and enhancement of the environment in Rother and the wider area. Their priorities for action are waste, energy and water. They usually meet on the last Tuesday of every month and will hold seperate local meetings in Rye and Bexhill (and hopefully Battle) on alternate months.

Visionary Soap is a fair trade business making soaps and body care products that works with partners in Palestine, Ghana, Nepal, Madagascar, Cambodia and Zimbabwe. They source their ingredients direct from these partners but make all their products locally. All ingredients are 100% organic. They have a regular stall at Hastings Farmers' Market.
